Ayurvedic treatment of Constipation
Constipation is a condition where a person has difficulty passing stool, passes stool less often, or feels the stomach is not fully cleared. It is very common in daily life and can cause discomfort, heaviness, and irritation. Many people experience constipation due to low fibre intake, less water, weak digestion, and irregular eating habits. If not managed on time, it can disturb routine and affect overall health
Causes of Constipation
- Low fibre diet: Eating very little fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and salads makes the stool dry and hard. Regular use of refined foods like bread, biscuits, noodles, and junk snacks reduces natural bowel movement.
- Less water intake: When the body does not get enough water, the intestines absorb more moisture from the stool, making it tight, dry, and difficult to pass without strain.
- Irregular eating habits: Skipping meals, eating very late at night, overeating, or eating at different times every day slows digestion and weakens the natural bowel rhythm.
- Lack of physical activity: Sitting for long hours, no walking, and a sedentary lifestyle reduce intestinal movement, leading to gas, bloating, and constipation over time.
- Ignoring natural urges: Delaying or controlling the urge to pass stool due to travel, hurry, or habit disturbs bowel signals and gradually leads to chronic constipation.
Symptoms of Constipation
- Hard or dry stool: The stool becomes tight, dry, and difficult to pass, often causing pain, small cracks, or excessive straining during bowel movement.
- Infrequent bowel movements: Passing stool less than three times a week, or feeling incomplete clearance even after spending time in the toilet, is a common sign.
- Gas and bloating: The stomach feels swollen, heavy, or tight due to trapped gas and slow digestion, making a person uncomfortable throughout the day.
- Abdominal discomfort and cramps: Many people experience lower stomach pain, pressure, or fullness after even small meals because the intestines are not moving properly.
- Loss of appetite and fatigue: Slow digestion and toxin buildup reduce hunger, cause bad breath, dullness in skin, irritability, and leave the person tired or low in energy.
Ayurvedic View for Constipation
In Ayurveda, constipation is known as Vibandh and is mainly caused by an imbalance of Vata dosha, which controls movement in the body.
When Vata increases due to dry food, cold drinks, stress, irregular meals, or lack of oil/ghee, the intestines become dry and slow.
Weak digestive fire (Mandagni) leads to the formation of Ama (toxins), which blocks body channels and makes bowel movements difficult.
Ayurvedic management focuses on softening the stool, improving digestion, and naturally balancing Vata for smoother daily clearance.
Simple remedies like warm water, ghee with milk at bedtime, soaked raisins, Triphala, and Isabgol provide gentle and effective relief.
